Bjork

Björk Guðmundsdóttir, nacida en Reykjavik (Islandia) el 21 de noviembre de 1965. Publicó su primer disco con tan sólo 11 años, lo que la lanzó a la fama en su país natal. Posteriormente formó parte de diferentes bandas punk islandesas de la epóca como Tappi Tikarrass o KUKL, pero fue con los Sugarcubes con quien alcanzó el reconocimiento internacional.

En 1990 editó un disco junto al trío jazzístico Gudmundar Ingólfssonar, donde versiona temas clásicos islandeses y otros internacionales y finalmente en 1993 edita el que es su primer disco en solitario (si obviamos su primera aparición como estrella infantil) al que bautizó como Debut. El disco mezclaba muchos estilos diferentes, instrumentos de diferentes partes del mundo y colaboraciones de artistas multiculturales. La continuación de éste debut vendría en la forma de un cd de remezclas de título: The Best Mixes From The Album-Debut For All The People Who Don’t Buy White-Labels

Bikini kill

Bikini Kill se forma a finales de los 80, por las entonces estudiantes, Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail y Kathi Wilcox, iniciando una idea de crear una revista feminista con el nombre de «Bikini Kill» que terminó concretándose en una banda. Por consecuente, llaman al guitarrista Billy Boredom, para completar la formación.

El grupo se caracterizó por su potencia y agresividad al tocar, formando parte del inicio de un movimiento denominado Riot Grrrl, llevando bien de frente el tema feminista. Por ejemplo, en sus presentaciones permitían que alguna mujer del público tomara el micrófono y comentara sobre el abuso sexual (o de otro tipo) que ha recibido. Después de casi mas de 8 años de vida, la banda finalmente se disolvió en 1998.

Este grupo formado en Tennessee, USA, es sin duda uno de los más rompedores de la escena musical de garage-rock de los últimos años. Gracias al gancho que ofrece su guapísima y extrovertida cantante Jemina Pearl (no solo por su físico y personalidad sino también por su adictiva voz y sus hiperactivas letras), este grupo ha cautivado a numerosos fans desde su fundacion en 2002. Además de Jemina, Nathan Vasquez, Jonas Stein y John Eatherly forman este grupo que también ha sido descrito como «jungle-rock».

Battles

Battles es una banda de math rock estadounidense. Después de una serie de EP’s la banda lanzó su primer LP en la discográfica Warp Records en mayo de 2007. El grupo está compuesto por músicos bastante conocidos, incluyendo al bateria John Stanier ex-Helmet (actualmente en Tomahawk), al guitarrista Ian Williams (ex-Don Caballero, ex-Storm & Stress), al guitarrista ex-Lynx Dave Konopka y a Tyondai Braxton (hijo del músico de Jazz Anthony Braxton) quien también toca la guitarra, el teclado y crea samples de voz.

Su album reciente Mirrored, grabado por Keith Souza en Machines With Magnets, vio la luz el 14 de mayo de 2007. El primer sencillo del album, «Atlas», salió como un streaming de radio el 21 de febrero de 2007 y su video fue sacado el 28 de febrero de 2007.

Recientemente el sencillo «Atlas» fue votado como «mejor sencillo de la semana» por la revista NME Magazine y recibió una excelente crítica en la revista británica Clash Magazine, donde se compara con Glitter Beat.

Aur revoir Simone

Harbouring a love of synthesizers and vintage drum machines, Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone made their UK debut with the release of mini album, ‘Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation’, on Moshi Moshi Records on October 31st. Offering up a generous helping of charm and intelligence, ‘Verses…’ is a lesson for us all in what expertly layered synths, ethereal, heart felt and heart-rendering vocals, dreamy melodies, and palpitating drum machine-induced disco beats should sound like when properly woven together. Au Revoir Simone started life in the Fall of 2003 when Erika (Forster, keyboards & vocals) and Annie (Hart, keyboards & vocals) first became acquainted on a long train ride home to NYC from a weekend getaway with friends. Along the way they exchanged stories and ambitions, and discovered that they shared a common desire to form an all-keyboard band. When they returned to NY, they started meeting regularly to play music.
After a time their friend Heather (D’Angelo, drum machines, keyboard & vocals) started joining in at these informal bedroom band practices, which also included former member Sung Bin Park (keyboard & vocals). Before too long, they started playing shows around NYC and Brooklyn. In January of 2005, Sun Bin left the band and the girls started anew as a trio. Keyboards found their natural home in the hands of Au Revoir Simone (or perhaps it was the other way round). A romantic notion it may be, but fate you might say had had a hand in their meeting – born out of a common love of synths then, Au Revoir Simone came to be. The band’s influences could be likened to a dutifully mined musical thrift store. Alongside the racks and railings of sometimes mismatched but wholly treasured records occupied by Modest Mouse, Stereolab, Mountain Goats, Louis Prima and Pavement, the likes of the Beach Boys, Bjork, Broadcast Belle & Sebastian, Bowie, the Beegees and Billie Holiday also take their place. Erika too harbours a love of German label Morr, specifically artists such as Guther, Lali Puna and Ms. John Soda.
Made principally using keyboards, drum machines and hand percussion, Au Revoir Simone’s sound is defined by their instrumentation. In their own words, and to put it simply, they make «warm and organic electronic music with forthright female vocalists». This, the band’s debut, was named after a tiny book Annie received in the post one day at work entitled ‘Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation’. The title seemed to capture perfectly music’s ability to make you feel, but more specifically how the band’s music was making Annie and the rest of the girls feel – complete, inspired, and happy. Recorded in Brooklyn, in their friend/producer/manager Rod’s basement apartment (to be more precise in fact, recorded in a former shower stall rigged up with quilts and fancy microphones to resemble a vocal booth), ‘Verses…’ was a lot of fun to make. Au Revoir Simone’s music would be the perfect soundtrack to an Autumnal picnic in the park…or Virgin Suicides if Air had not been so triumphant with the original score.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys es una banda inglesa de rock alternativo e indie rock proveniente de High Green, un suburbio en las afueras de Sheffield, Inglaterra. Formada en 2002, la banda actualmente está compuesta por el guitarrista principal y vocalista Alex Turner, el guitarrista Jamie Cook, el baterista Matt Helders y Nick O’Malley en el bajo, una posición anteriormente ocupada por Andy Nicholson.

Es un conjunto musical de Indie pop-avant-garde australiano. El grupo está integrado por: Cameron Bird, James Cecil, Gus Franklin, Isobel Knowles, Jamie Mildren, Sam Perry, Tara Shackell, y Kellie Sutherland. Se caracteriza por una gran variedad de sonidos, obtenidos a través de medios electrónicos y por la experimentación con gran cantidad de instrumentos, incluyendo instrumentos de viento-metal, flautas, sintetizadores analógicos, samplers, un glockenspiel (también conocido com Lira), una tuba, un clarinete, un trombón, trompetas e instrumentos más frecuentes como batería, guitarra y bajo.
